The Amethyst Shooting Star is a member of the
Primrose Family
(Primulaceae). This particular Shooting Star is only found on the
bluffs overlooking rivers like the Mississippi, Susquehanna and
the Ohio. The flowers are nodding with backward pointing petals
that bloom im flat clusters. The leaves are green and oval
shapped, lying close to the ground.
The flower pictured above was found on a wooded bluff
overlooking the Mississippi River. The plant was far more
abundant in the days of the prairie settlers who called it
"Prairie Pointers" In full bloom the clusters are very beautiful.
They bloom in April to very early May.
