The Red-Spotted Purple is one of six species of Admirals and Sisters found in North America. This butterfly is found from the Great Lake region south to the Gulf Coast of North America, and from the Atlantic coast to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. They are rarely found at high altitudes or cooler climates.

The caterpillars live on the leaves of trees and shrubs such as the Wild Cherry, poplar, aspen and black oak among others.
