American Robin

The American Robin is a medium-sized bird about 10 inches long. He is slate colored on his back with a russet colored breast. In my part of the world he is the very first sign that Spring has finally arrived. We await his return with bated breath after the long winter knowing that Spring is here the day you see your first Robin.

Robins build their nests in trees, bushes, atop lights on the porch, in gutters, basically any place they can find some room. This year I have one on top of the light on my deck and Mama Robin is not happy with me when I open the door to go out to the deck. She is pictured above as she just finished sqacking at me for disturbing her and her babies.

Robins prefer worms and bugs but they also eat sunflower seeds and other things if they are on the ground or at a ground feeder.
