House Sparrow
Passer domesticus

The House Sparrow is not actually a Sparrow at all, but is a member of the family Passeridae, a group of birds called weaver finches or weaverbirds which are native to Eurasia and Africa. They are also called Old World Sparrows and English Sparrows. These birds were introduced into the United States at Brooklyn, NY in about 1850 with the thought to controling certain insect pests. They didn't help with the insect pests, but they did eventully breed and spread all over the country.
